A Shop Reads Your Resume to Find Out One Thing: Can You Run the Setup Alone?
If your resume does not answer that in the first ten seconds, it goes on the maybe pile. This guide shows you how to say it plainly, which machines and controls to name, and a full one-page example you can copy. Load and Run, Set Up, or Program — Say Exactly Where You Sit
Two terms in the table below come up in every posting. Setup means getting a machine ready for a new job — loading the tooling, setting the work offsets (telling the machine where the part sits), and proving out the first part. G-code is the program the machine reads, and editing it at the control means fixing a line of it on the machine itself.
Be honest here. If you have only loaded parts and pressed cycle start, say so and say what you checked while doing it. Overclaiming gets found out in the first week, sometimes in the interview.

Mills, Lathes, Fanuc, Haas — the Machine List That Gets You a Callback
Write the machine type, the control, and roughly how long you ran it. “3-axis mill, Haas control, 4 years” tells a foreman more than a paragraph of adjectives. Add the materials you cut and the tolerances you held — aerospace aluminum at plus or minus half a thousandth is a different job from mild steel brackets.

A Full CNC Machinist Resume, One Page, Ready to Copy
He started as an operator and moved up to setup work, so the two stages sit as two separate entries with different job titles. If you spent years at one shop and moved up, do the same — one long entry hides the promotion, and the promotion is the part a foreman wants to see.
Notice how much of the page is made of nouns: mills, lathes, Fanuc, Haas, 4140 steel, bore gauge, setup sheets. That is what a machining resume is for. His tolerance figure and his materials appear right in the duty lines, not in a vague sentence about quality.

Work Offsets, Tool Wear, First Articles — How to Write a Day at the Machine
That last one separates machinists from button pushers. Tool wear, chatter, a finish going rough — say what you changed. “Changing inserts when tool wear started showing up in the part sizes” shows you were watching, deciding, and acting.
If your shop repeats jobs, mention setup sheets or documented setups. Shops lose real money re-figuring a job they ran last year, so the person who writes it down is worth keeping.

Skip the filler. “Attention to detail” on a machinist resume says nothing — holding half a thousandth in stainless says it properly.

The Paragraph at the Top That Tells a Shop What You Can Run Alone
Job shop and production work are different animals, so name yours. A job shop runs small batches and changes setups constantly. A production shop runs the same part for weeks. A foreman reads that word and knows whether you will fit his floor.
Mastercam, Fusion 360, and Editing G-Code — What You Can Safely Claim
Write the level you are at, not just the name. There is a big gap between opening a program somebody else built, editing an existing toolpath, and programming a part from a model on your own. “Writing 2D toolpaths in Mastercam” is a precise claim. “Mastercam” on its own invites a test you might fail.
Conversational programming counts too. If you typed programs straight into the machine on a Mazatrol or Haas control, say that — it is a genuine skill and plenty of shops run that way. And say whether you can read a 3D model file, since more customers send models instead of paper drawings.
NIMS, Apprenticeship Hours, and Shop Classes — Which Training Counts
NIMS is the National Institute for Metalworking Skills, and its Machining Level I certification is the credential most often named in US postings. It is tested on real parts you machine, so it carries weight. If you served an apprenticeship, write the years and the sponsoring shop — four years indentured is worth more than a certificate. Machine-builder classes count as well, such as a Haas programming class run through a distributor.
List each item with a year. If your training is old, add anything recent you have done, even an evening blueprint reading class. Sending a short cover letter is worth it here, because it lets you say which materials and tolerances you know best.
“Operated CNC Machines” and Other Lines a Shop Foreman Skips Past
1. Not saying mill or lathe. “CNC machines” could be either, and a shop hiring a lathe hand will move on. Name both if you ran both.
2. No control names. Fanuc, Haas, Mazatrol, Siemens, Heidenhain. These are searched for by name and cost nothing to add.
3. Not saying whether you set up. This is the pay line. Write setup, editing, or load and run, plainly.
4. No tolerances or materials. “Precision parts” means nothing. Plus or minus 0.0005 in. in 304 stainless means everything.
5. Overclaiming CAM. Say you program in Mastercam and someone will sit you at a computer at the interview. Claim only what you can show.
6. Nothing about tooling. Inserts, drills, feeds, speeds, chatter — this is the knowledge that separates a machinist from an operator.
7. Leaving out shift and unattended running. Second shift and lights-out setups are hard to staff, and saying you can do them moves you up the pile.
8. One long entry hiding a promotion. If you moved from operator to setup at the same shop, list it as two entries with different job titles.
One Last Pass Before You Send Your Machinist Resume
Machines and controls named — mill or lathe, how many axes, Fanuc, Haas, Mazatrol, and roughly how long on each.
Your level stated plainly — load and run, setup, editing at the control, or offline programming.
Materials and tolerances in the duty lines — aluminum, 4140, 304 stainless, and the closest tolerance you have held.
Add your NIMS or apprenticeship with the year, keep it to one page and two or three entries, and split a promotion into separate titles. If a job posting names a control you know, put that word in your summary before you send it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most shops would call that a CNC operator, and there is no shame in the title. Write what you actually do — running saved programs, checking sizes, adjusting tool offsets, deburring, logging scrap. Then say in your summary that you are working toward setup work. Shops hire operators constantly and promote from the floor, so an honest operator resume gets more callbacks than an inflated machinist one. Getting caught overclaiming in week one costs you the job.
Yes. Controls are one of the first things a foreman looks for, because putting someone on an unfamiliar control costs weeks of slow work. Write the control next to the machine and the years, for example a 3-axis mill on a Haas control for four years. If you have run more than one control, list them all — that flexibility is worth money. Only list controls you have actually stood in front of.
No. Most shops care more about hours on the floor than paper, and plenty of good machinists have never taken the test. That said, NIMS Machining Level I is the credential named most often in US job postings, and it is tested on real parts you machine. It helps most when you are early in the trade or switching shops without a long history. If you do not have it, list your technical college work, apprenticeship years, or any machine-builder class instead.
Put the closest tolerance you have genuinely held, in the duty line where you did the work. Something like machining parts to plus or minus 0.0005 in. in 304 stainless. Pair it with the material, because holding a tight number in aluminum and in stainless are different problems. Do not quote a tolerance from the drawing if the feature was easy to hit. One honest figure is worth more than a general claim about precision work.
Often, yes. Many shops finish the interview on the floor. Expect a drawing to read out loud, a part and a micrometer to measure, or questions about how you would set up a job. Some will ask you to walk through your last setup step by step. If you claimed CAM programming, expect to be sat at a computer. Bring your own calipers or micrometer if you own them — shops notice.
Not for most operator and setup jobs. Plenty of shops have one programmer and everyone else runs the code. Knowing CAM software does open doors in small shops where the machinist programs their own work, and it usually comes with better pay. If you know some, write the exact level, such as writing 2D toolpaths rather than just naming the software. Free learning versions of Fusion 360 make this a realistic skill to add on your own time.
List the same employer twice, as two entries with different job titles and their own date ranges. Give the more recent, higher-level role the fuller set of duty lines. One combined entry hides the promotion, and the promotion is exactly what shows a foreman you can be trusted with a machine. The same approach works for moving from a manual lathe to CNC work.
One page, with two or three job entries. Give your most recent roles four to six duty lines each. Older jobs can be a single line with the title, shop, and years. Keep the space for machines, controls, materials, and tolerances — that is what gets read. If you have twenty years and a dozen shops behind you, pick the roles closest to the job you are applying for.
